Understanding the "Community Land Trust" Model
" A Community Land Trust (CLT) is a way of placing land, air, water, and minerals in a Commons with a charter based on the principles of sustainable and ecologically-sound stewardship and use. The land in a CLT is held in a trust by a democratically-governed, regionally based, open membership, non-profit corporation."
As a citizen-lead initiative, the CLT approach to land provides many benefits including a collaborative building of wealth, supported workforce, an increase in upward mobility, and the fostering of economic resilience.
The CLT Model involves a unique adoption process through:
- Civic engagement
- Needs assessment
- Grassroots organizing
- Project development
Organic Farmland Trust embraces this model and with it, hopes to increase the accessibility of affordable organic farmland for aspiring farmers.
